Why Zines Are More Important Than You Think

By know I’m sure you know I love zines. Like a lot. So why is it that I believe so much in these tangible objects? Well, there are many reasons. Some you probably already know and some you don’t.

Firstly though, I must confess. I’m tired of the tech-bro oligarchs harvesting our data. We all know data is the crack cocaine of silicon valley and we’ve willingly chained ourselves to a technocratic system that feeds on us like leeches we can’t get rid of, or at least very difficultly. Zines, books, comics, allow for a private escape from them leeches. An escape in which you can think for yourself, without being spoon-fed by an algorithm.

When looking at the fully democratized DIY nature zines, it’s easy to notice that this medium is for the people by the people, with no middle men involved or needed. It empowers us by using our creativity to craft stories, document our work, and much more. Empowerment sounds better to me than enslavement, and being an active creator feels better than being a passive consumer.

This all stems from logical thinking, but we dive into all the details with this video on YouTube. And then you can say, well Poe you’re pushing us to buy your zines, and you’re posting on the tube?!? How dare you!? No don’t get me wrong, I’m pushing you to make a damn zine, to make anything really, and to reclaim your rights to ownership. I hope you enjoy the video regardless.
